Issue 116 of Mètode, the scientific communication journal published by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Research at the University of Valencia, is dedicated to photography and the prominent role it has played in understanding and protecting nature.
The volume was coordinated by the researcher and conservation photographer Roberto García-Roa. García-Roa’s photographic work has won numerous awards. In fact, some of his images illustrate both the cover and inner pages of the issue, demonstrating the powerful message that photographs can convey to the public.
«Moments of science» focuses on how this technology has allowed us to improve our knowledge of the environment and ourselves, and has brought issues such as biodiversity and climate change closer to society. The monograph concludes with an interview with conservation biologist and photographer Cristina Mittermeier.
This volume also includes two other interviews: with philosopher and Princeton professor of bioethics Peter Singer, and architect and author of Sitopia, Carolyn Steel.
Clinical trials, Miyazaki and botanical illustration
This issue brings us other topics of interest, such as fraud in clinical trials, examined through the Bezwoda case and breast cancer; the relationship between nature and technology in Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films (Nausicaä, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s moving castle, My neighbor Totoro…); and the career of Suzanne Davit, an artist with a passion for nature, which allows us to approach botanical illustration from a gender perspective.
The issue closes with book reviews and a handful of articles by the journal’s usual contributors, who bring us up to date with the latest scientific developments in their respective fields.
