The interactive virtual museum «Leyendo el libro de la vida» (“Reading the book of life”) has received the Prisma Award for Outreach 2011 Premios Prismas Casa de las Ciencias de La Coruña (La Coruña House of Science Prisma Awards) for best popular science website. These awards are an initiative taken by La Coruña City Council and run by the Science Museums in La Coruña.

The 4,000 euro award, sponsored by the University of Valencia’s popular science journal Mètode, highlights the fact that the site is well documented and achieves a good balance between text and image. Moreover, within the same category Mini Atlas Xeobotánico de Galicia received an honorary mention for its educational and didactic nature.

The award-winning virtual museum, run by Jordi Doménech Casal, PhD in Biology, allows visitors to take a tour around different sections related to genetics, covering issues such as stem cells, genetics, evolution and the structure of DNA.

By sponsoring this award for the best outreach website, Mètode aims to promote scientific awareness through new formats, with the goal of contributing to the dissemination of scientific culture.

In the other sections, the award winners were TVE and Turkana Films for the documentary En busca del primer europeo (“In search of the first European”) and Javier Fresán for his article Perelman no estuvo allí (“Perelman wasn’t there”). The Special Jury Prize, awarded to individuals or institutions whose work in popularizing science is outstanding, has been awarded to the researcher Margarita Salas. The awards ceremony will take place in La Coruña, on the 12th of November.
