Catedràtic emèrit de Lingüística de la Universitat de Barcelona. Ha publicat diversos estudis sobre lingüística, semiòtica i teoria de la comunicació. Va obtenir la Creu de Sant Jordi de la Generalitat de Catalunya el 2003. El seu primer llibre, premi Anagrama d’assaig, va ser Elementos de lingüística matemática (Anagrama, 1975). Dos dels seus llibres més recents són La fiesta de los sentidos (Now Books, 2009) i Del amor, la mentira y la persuasión (Destino, 2013).
