Professor de Filosofia Lucyle T. Werkmeister i director del Programa d’Història i Filosofia de la Ciència de Universitat Estatal de Florida (EUA). És autor de nombrosos llibres entre els quals es troben Taking Darwin seriously: A naturalistic approach to philosophy (1986), The philosophy of biology today (1988) i Charles Darwin (2008). Ha estat també fundador de la revista Biology and Philosophy.
