Interview with José Pío Beltrán

«Learning of the scientific method is neglected in high schools»

Doctor in Chemistry and research professor at CSIC José Pío Beltrán has recently been chosen president of the European Plant Science Organisation. The entity is formed by scientists from more than 27 different countries, and fights for advances in the field of plant research.

José Pío Beltrán guides us through the greenhouses in the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cell Biology (CSIC-UPV), where he works in his lab with edelweiss, a high-mountain flower, and with a more common species, the tomato. In this location he talks about how the economic crisis affects research centres such as CSIC, about GMOs and the controversy around them and about the worst danger for Spanish science: the brain drain.
