Catedràtic de Física Fonamental de la Universitat de Barcelona. És doctor honoris causa per la Universitat de Nova York (1996) i membre de la Societat Americana de Física. El seu treball de recerca en l’àrea del magnetisme quàntic ha estat reconegut amb diversos guardons, entre ells el Premi Nacional de Recerca Blas Cabrera el 2009 i, recentment, la Medalla de la Reial Societat Espanyola de Física el 2016.
