Primatology

Primatology

The field of primatology is fundamental to our understanding not only of the diversity of primate species, their morphology, behaviour, and relationships within the ecosystems they inhabit, but also of a question that has long preoccupied us, namely, what defines humans: what do we share with other primates and what makes us different? What evolutionary paths have we followed, both together and separately? What events and what selection pressures have shaped us? And, ultimately, what does the future hold?

To reconstruct the evolutionary history of non-human primates is to reconstruct our own history. That is why we look for fossils and try to interpret the signs of past primate activity. We also observe the behaviour of our living relatives and try to find out the underlying cognitive processes in controlled experiments, sometimes using the most advanced technology. We inevitably raise ethical questions, aware of the impact we have on the ecosystems of the species we study and the responsibility of keeping animals in captivity. And, consequently, we try to seek solutions that necessarily involve promoting conservation and animal welfare.

These and other questions are the starting point for this monograph, which is open to articles analysing the life and organisation of primates from an interdisciplinary perspective.
