The participation of citizens in scientific research is one step further in promoting public engagement with science. Citizen science spans a wide array of projects, in multiple scientific disciplines, and has already given rise to dedicated associations, journals, international and national networks. It has become a key issue in European science policy and also in a growing number of countries.
There are countless advantages in involving citizens in the research project, from the ability to collect or analyse large amounts of data to raising awareness about scientific issues, from benefiting from the experiential knowledge of local residents or gifted amateurs to increasing trust in scientists. However, there are also several challenges and difficulties in citizen science. Participation is still restricted to the highly educated few, accuracy has to be ensured through strenuous work, and the expectations and rewards of citizens and scientists have to managed and negotiated.
So, how can citizen science be further democratised? Which good practices can be shared and replicated? How is it changing the way science is done? And is it transforming the way science is perceived by the public?
This monograph on citizen science is open to original and review papers from a wide range of methodological approaches, all related to citizen science. Originals will be peer-reviewed by external referees and published in Catalan and Spanish in the quarterly journal Mètode and annually in English in Mètode Science Studies Journal
